If you want to stay dry, you can hike around and catch glimpses of wildlife from afar. You can arrange some pretty incredible adventures here, including snorkeling and scuba diving. Read here for diving regulations. I mostly know this place for their cute and surprisingly popular T-shirts, but Pizza My Heart makes great pizza, too. And, if you or someone you are traveling with has a special diet, this is also a great place to find a vegan or vegetarian pizza option.
Be sure to grab a map at the gate before you set off on your seventeen mile adventure. You can speed right through, of course, but there are 17 marked locations where you should consider getting out and admiring the view. Several of the stops boast great access to otters, birds, and sea lions. If you want to make your 17 Mile Drive a day trip, the beaches deserve at least a few hours of your time. While the water is typically too cold and rough for swimming, you can lay out a picnic blanket or walk along the edge of the water.
Some more adventurous visitors might want to jump in and body surf, though! Carmel has dozens of brilliant restaurants to choose from. For a light, Mediterranean style meal, try Yafa. If you are interested in the beginnings of Carmel-by-the-Sea, you can stop by the Mission for mass or a visit to the museum.
You could hire a guide to give you all of the details, or wander around on your own taking photos. Both are great options, it just depends on your level of interest and how long you want to spend there. One of my favorite things about Carmel is that the town is full of locally owned shops and restaurants. Most restaurants will likely have a good clam chowder or lobster bisque worth trying. Pangaea Grill has a stellar reputation; you can check its Yelp reviews if you need convincing.
Carmel is NOT a party town. It's a romantic paradise. So, there are no pumping clubs. The nightlife is all about pubs, cocktail bars, and phenomenal happy hours. Live music is also a popular feature in a lot of these hotspots. Locals love The Forge in the Forest at Junipero and 5th as it's been a hotspot for happy hours for almost 50 years. Brophy's tavern is great for sports lovers, Sade's is iconic but cash-only, Vesuvio's has an awesome rooftop bar, and Terry's Lounge is completely pet-friendly.
Then, of course, there are over 20 wine tasting rooms belonging to local vineyards Galante, Scheid, and Silvestri, which is owned by Alan Silvestri the film composer. Anyone who takes golfing seriously is well aware of Pebble Beach, which is located right next to the town of Carmel. After all, it's constantly regarded as the number one golf resort in the country. This is partly because the picturesque course is located right on the ocean and boasts some of the best views around, it being the home of major Pro-Am tournaments, and how it attracts regular world-class players like Tiger Woods.
But it's also really hard to play on because of its status. Less exclusive and less expensive courses like the historic Del Monte, Bayonet and Black Horse are nearly as superb.
Due to the presence of Pebble Beach Golf Course and the amazing scenery, there's no wonder why Carmel relies heavily on tourism and most provide for all sorts of travelers. The Tickle Pink Inn offers huge suites with fireplaces and private balconies overlooking the cove and Point Lobos Marine Reseverse but is very expensive. Carmel Valley Ranch is perfect for families and couples and has some truly spectacular amenities.
But there are also mid-range hotels like the pet-friendly Tradewinds Carmel, the gorgeous Cyrpires Inn and a host of independent bed and breakfast spots that are truly, truly gorgeous. Dylan Parker is a list and content writer working for Valnet Inc.
