Terrain is covered by percent snowmaking. Despite being so far south, Ober Gatlinburg's average ski season runs from mid-December through early March. As with any resort, weather conditions play a big role in opening and closing dates during any given year, so check with the resort ahead of time to get a feel for conditions. Ober Gatlinburg rents out all equipment you need including skis, snowboards boots and helmets, and clothing such as ski jackets and pants.
Ober Gatlinburg's website states lessons are mandatory for first-time skiers and snowboarders. Though Tennessee only has one resort, North Carolina has a half-dozen, and most of them line the mountains along its border with Tennessee.
Options include Beech Mountain, the tallest resort in the east with a 5,foot peak; Sugar Mountain, a resort with 1, vertical feet and acres; and Wolf Ridge, which has 20 slopes.
