Even if you know nothing about "Avatar" before going into it, the show explains everything in the opening sequence. Every episode begins the same way: Introducing how fractured the world has become and demonstrating what all of the benders are capable of.
And if you pay close enough attention, you should be able to make out each of the benders. The Firebender is Princess Azula, whom fans come to know far too well over the course of the series, while the Waterbender is Master Pakku. It's unclear who the Airbender is, but the Earthbender requires a bit of a deep dive to figure out who it is. The character of Toph Bei Fong was originally written as a male, specifically a 16 year old teenage boy. The earthbender in the intro was Toph's original design.
The character was initially designed to be a foil to Sokka, with Toph being a muscly jock to Sokka's nerdy personality. The writers then toyed with the idea of making Toph, the world's greatest earthbender, into a 12 year old little blind girl, which would have been funnier to them. Creators DiMartino and Konietzko were initially not fond of the idea but grew to like it after several discussions with the writers.
Toph's prototype design was reused for minor characters like The Boulder, her opponent in the earthbending wrestling ring, and Sud, Avatar Roku's earthbending teacher.
Casting director Maryanne Dacey was asked to find someone like the character and managed to get Jason Isaacs, who portrayed Tavington in the film.
None of the characters, except for Toph Bei Fong, have a last name. They are known from their respected Nations i. The firebenders' duel, which plays an important role throughout the series, is called "Agni-kai. Dai Li, the name of the protectors of Ba Sing Se, has a meaning in Chinese, which is "to act on behalf of someone in a responsible position" or "to act as an agent or proxy. The music for the credits is the same throughout all of the episodes except in the the series finale, "Sozin's Comet, Part 4: Avatar Aang," where they went for more heroic music.
Counting the episodes where they do not have any lines, the most prominent characters of the show are Aang, Katara, and Sokka, who appear in every episode of the series except episode 27, "Zuko Alone" although Aang's spiritless body can be seen during the "Previously, on Avatar The second place belongs to Momo, who appears in 56 episodes, followed by Appa with 54, Zuko with 48, Iroh with 39, and Toph with 36 episodes.
The most infrequently recurring major character is Azula, who appears in 22 episodes. Each episode, from the time the script writing began to the time the episode was finished and ready to air, took about nine months to make. These time periods overlap, of course, as the show has 61 episodes, which would take more than 45 years, if production had been sequential. Admiral Zhao, just like Zuko, was one of the last characters to be written into the show.
It was decided that season 1 needed a real villain for viewers to sink their hate into, because Zuko was too sympathetic to be hated and Ozai didn't have enough of a presence in season 1 to be a real villain yet, so Zhao was written into the show alongside Zuko to be the season's antagonist.
Even though Bei Fong is the only actual surname mentioned in the series, there are two fake surnames as well: Fire and Pippinpaddleopsicopolis made up by Sokka and Aang, respectively.
Copying The Rock's maneurism of speech and referring to himself at the third person. Mick Foley and The Rock have been both rivals and friends in the ring, even teaming up as The Rock n' Sock connection at one point.
The original voice of Aang was Mitchell Musso, playing him in the show's pilot. However, the final voice for Aang was Zach Tyler Eisen.
In the early stages of writing, Momo, the flying lemur that acts as an animal guide to the group, was initially conceived as the reincarnation of Monk Gyatso, Aang's long dead airbending mentor and friend. It would have been a reference to the Buddhist belief in reincarnation and to show that, even in death, Gyatso will always be by his side.
This idea was scrapped. Throughout the series, when the main group rides Appa, you can often see their rolled up sleeping bags or tents behind the saddle. The rolls form three spirals, which is the symbol of the air nomads.
An owl spirit introduced in season 2 in the library is known as Wan Shi Tong, he who knows 10, things. His name quite literally translates to "one who knows 10, things". Many have wondered if this series is considered to be anime. As the show went on, the identity of these benders became clearer. The first bender in the sequence is the water bender character, who is, in fact, Master Pakku. Pakku was first introduced in the last part of the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Next, Azula was revealed as the character firebending in the credits.
Far crueler than Zuko, she threatened not only Aang but chased her own brother and uncle. A hundred years passed and my brother Sokka and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang. Although his airbending skills were great, he had a lot to learn before he was ready to save anyone. But from the first day I met him, I believed Aang would save the world. And you know what? I was right. Zuko, Ozai's son and our ally, became the new Fire Lord.
The title card marks the end of the opening sequence for The Legend of Korra. The show opens by showcasing the four most recent Avatars bending their native element: earthbending by Kyoshi , firebending by Roku , airbending by Aang , and waterbending by Korra. Behind each bender is calligraphy similar to that seen in the background of the original series. It subsequently shows a picture of Team Avatar , followed by a map of the Avatar World.
After that, Tenzin explains the transformation of the Fire Nation colonies into the United Republic of Nations , before the picture zooms in on the capital: Republic City. A statue of Aang is seen on an island in the bay, and it is explained how the Avatar accomplished many remarkable feats in his life, before he eventually died and was reborn into the next nation of the Avatar Cycle.
Tenzin narrates the opening sequence. In the first episode , he states:. When I was a boy, my father, Avatar Aang, told me the story of how he and his friends heroically ended the Hundred Year War. Avatar Aang and Fire Lord Zuko transformed the Fire Nation colonies into the United Republic of Nations, a society where benders and nonbenders from all over the world could live and thrive together in peace and harmony.
They named the capital of this great land Republic City. Avatar Aang accomplished many remarkable things in his life, but sadly, his time in this world came to an end. And like the cycle of the seasons, the cycle of the Avatar began anew. Only the Avatar can master all four elements and bring balance to the world. Unlike the opening sequences of the series, which all feature original animation, the opening of the roleplaying game reuses animation from both series.
The showcase the bending arts: airbending is performed by Zaheer, using animation from his fight against Korra and Tonraq on Laghima's Peak; waterbending is performed by Katara, using animation from her fight against Hama; earthbending is performed by Bolin, using animation from his escape from the Northern Air Temple; and firebending is performed by Zuko, using animation from his Comet-Enhanced Agni Kai against Azula.
Each element is identified by Iroh's narration.
