Where is golden currant

From the primary vegetation just west of the post, head directly south past the large bend in the Kamassa River. You should find a plant or two growing near the river on its southern bank on the bottom corner of the bend.

There is a light smattering of the vegetation growing along the tracks on the far Eastern border of the state. There are a couple more Golden Currant harvests to be had over in West Elizabeth.

A great border shrub, or as a centerpiece. Very low maintenance. There are over 25 species of Ribes in California alone, and Golden Currant is among the most drought tolerant. Currants are a great wildlife attractor, as well. They are a valuable food source for songbirds, bumblebees, hummingbirds, butterflies, and other native wildlife.

Northwest Native American tribes today still value this special plant as food, medicine, and family. Despite great cultural losses, they continue to work towards stewarding and restoring wild populations, both strengthening the integrity of the ecology and sustaining their cultural heritage and wisdom.

These strong and recovering peoples and plants deserve our respect, gratitude, and reparations. However, we do recommend pruning for fruit productivity and shape it can handle hard pruning. For particularly vigorous plants, it may be necessary to prune limbs halfway back in the Winter annually to prevent them from arching onto the ground the following Autumn. There are two main varieties: Ribes aureum var aureum and Ribes var.

Both are known by the common name of golden currant. Ribes aureum var aureum grows in high mountains where winter temperatures dip below zero degrees F, and tends to have an upright form. Ribes aureum var gracillimum grows in the coast and foothills, and tends to have a more sprawling form that works for groundcover applications. The Golden currant grows best in areas with somewhat more ground water, such as the bottom of slopes, near creeks or canyon bottoms, or near irrigated areas.

On the coast, it prefers full sun. Inland, it prefers part shade and does best when surrounded by mulch. It grows well under oak trees and in mixed chaparral. When it's thriving, it self-seeds and spreads out from the original plant and can serve as a groundcover.
