You probably guessed it, right? The American Retrievers love to be on the go, or into something. Like her namesake, the American lab can be a reasonably headstrong lass, so owners need to make sure to train her well, or she may run circles around you!
Now we can immediately calm down a bit because the English Retriever is the more mellow cousin. Slightly shorter and stockier, English labs have a thick, powerful neck, a thick—sometimes wavy—coat and a wider stance, giving the British variation of the breed a more powerful appearance.
Now you might be asking where did the English Labrador come from? Well in , a couple of English noblemen were in Canada. They found out about the Labrador and decided that they needed a good hunting dog.
So when they returned to England they had the ancestors to the English Labrador Retriever. The English Labrador Retriever is commonly bred for show and conformation, which is well-suited to their quieter and calmer personality. Make no mistake though; the English Retriever still loves to play and have fun.
So the differences between the English Lab vs American Labrador are both physical and in temperament, due to selective breeding over decades. The American lab tends to be more athletic and energetic, while the English lab tends to be stockier and friendly but calmer. However, all the personality traits we love about the Labrador are present in both breeds.
So if you like one, you will also enjoy the other. All branches of the Labrador Retriever family are loyal, loving, affectionate and playful without an ounce of aggression. Labradors are great family dogs, but not great guard dogs. All Labrador Retrievers are prone to obesity with age if they get too many treats but not enough exercise. Being an intelligent breed, they need something to keep them occupied and busy, or else they can become obsessed with treats instead.
This does not mean their roles are non-interchangeable. There are American Labs which are bred for the shows and there are English Labs that help their owners in hunting and field trials. This is the reason why kennel clubs across the world did not differentiate between them using a standard measure. But you can surely find out the differences by looking at their appearance and in some cases by their behaviour.

Have a look at the characteristics of an English Labrador retriever. English Labradors are calmer and quieter when compared with their American friends. They have comparatively lesser energy levels and are comfortable to sit in the couch along with the master all-day. They have a sweet and mellow temperament which makes them easy to train even for a less experienced owner.
They tend to be highly social and get easily distracted to other things. Suppose you visit a park with your English Lab it really gets excited and distracted by looking at other people and other dogs. English Labs also tend to mature slowly in terms of mental maturity.
Even a 2-year-old English Lab can behave like a puppy sometimes. My English Labrador which is almost 2 years old still thinks itself as a puppy. But this is not a general rule for all English Labs. An American Labrador is mostly bred for hunting and working in the field. For a Labrador to work in the field, it needs to have certain physical and mental characteristics to perform its job efficiently.
Have a look at the characteristics that define an American Labrador retriever. The head does not seem wide like the English ones. They have a narrower head and longer muzzle. As their purpose is for field trails, they have higher energy levels. They are very active and always ready for any kind of action. In many cases, American Labradors tend to have greater boldness and are considered a little headstrong. These characteristics are developed because of the nature of their outdoor work.
This is not always a rule, because my first Labrador which is an American type was calmer and an obedient dog all his life. They need a lot of daily physical exercise as their body craves for it. A simple walk or a simple play may not be sufficient for an American Labrador. It is best suited as a working dog than a simple family pet. As i told you my first Lab was a wonderful family pet. Too many names of Labradors increased confusion among people. The single breed Labrador has already been divided unofficially into English and American type just to differentiate them for convenience purposes.
New names such as British Labrador and Canadian Labrador also started emerging. A British Labrador is nothing but an English Labrador. Since they are Labs from Britain, they are called British Labradors.
Some Labrador breeders claim British Labs as a special category of Labs which is not true. A breeder who is established in Britain may call his puppies British Labradors, but there is no official Britain Labrador. This is the same case with Canadian Labradors. There is no separate or special Labrador known as the Canadian Labrador. Or some breeders based in Canada may call their Labs as Canadian Labradors.
Whether you choose an American Labrador or an English Labrador, what you bring home is nothing but a Labrador retriever. You could find dual purpose hunting and adventure dogs like those that Stewart and company put out at Wildrose, or a Lab that is expected to do nothing more than retrieve tennis balls and lay on the couch all day.
Such is the case with American Labs as well. The spectrum covers all types of dogs in the category, and while you can say that retrievers here are high-drive, bigger Labs that can handle late-season ducks in choppy, near-freezing waters, that means nothing until you get into individual bloodlines. A British or American Lab may fully live up to the stereotypes, or seem to disprove them. It always boils down to individual bloodlines. It should come as no surprise that generations of selective, deliberate breeding in the traditional English style will often produce high performing dogs.
While you may want to start your search at British or American due to personal preference for appearance, understand that the bulk of what makes a dog great or not so great is the result of generations of pairings between dogs with desirable traits—no matter what country they hail from.
